High school in the United States isn’t just classes; it’s a lot more. Lots of teenagers play on the different sports teams their high schools organize. [a] There are teams for basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, and a large number of other sports. The teams’ rivals are teams from other high schools in their city or in other towns not too far away.
Music and drama are classes that high school students sometimes have, but a lot of kids also practice for music and drama performances after school. These performances usually only happen after a lot of practice and preparation in the evenings or on the weekends. [b] And students who like the same kinds of things, for example, French, science, or movies, often get together to study with their classmates outside of class.
Then there are parties and other activities for students to get together to have fun. [c] Schools also plan vacations for students so they can go places together during spring break or at the end of a semester. [d]
Because of all of the different things happening outside of classes, schools usually have a student council. They have elections, and students vote for a small number of their friends to be on this student council to make decisions about student activities. These students help plan and organize when, where, and how these activities will happen. It’s a lot of work for the students that are elected.
And all of these activities after school are also a lot of work for a lot of teachers, and for some students’ parents too. Sometimes, teachers of classes like French or science are also coaches of sports or other activities. Parents often help as assistants to teams, or with activities and performances. And both teachers and parents go to student parties or on student vacations to look after the teenagers. So, high school is not just about the classes teens take. It’s about a complete education.
