BIOGRAPHY (Biography):
Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. He was the second of three children. His parents were actors, but they both died when he was a child. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, a wealthy couple from Richmond, Virginia. The Allans never officially adopted him, but they gave him their name. Poe had a difficult relationship with his foster father, who disapproved of his literary ambitions. In 1826, Poe entered the University of Virginia, but he left after a year due to lack of financial support. He then joined the U.S. Army and later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1831, he was again forced to leave due to lack of financial support.
From 1831 to 1835, Edgar Allan Poe lived in Baltimore, Maryland, with his aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter, his cousin Virginia. In 1835, he married Virginia, who was only 13 years old at the time. The couple moved to Richmond, where Poe worked as an editor. In 1838, they moved to Philadelphia, where Poe continued to work as an editor and writer. In 1845, the couple moved to New York City. In 1847, Virginia passed away at the age of 24 years. Poe was overcome by grief, and his health began to deteriorate. He continued to struggle with financial problems.
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, critic, and editor best known for evocative short stories and poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. He died in 1849. Poe's work as an editor, a poet, and a critic had a profound impact on American and international literature.
