Friends of the Los Angeles River Kamogawa City Japan and FoLARs partnership was started in 2010 when 80 Japanese Hula Dancers collected trash on a hillside in Kamogawa In 2014 FoLAR found out about Kamogawa Citys nature education program and started Friends of Kamogawa to support their grant for projects at Numa Benten and Omigawa Parks FoLAR Friends of the Los Angeles River is based in Los Angeles and promotes environmental activism river restoration arts and education Facts about cranes Cranes are often seen as happy noble symbols of luck and longevity 1024 years The Japanese redcrowned crane is dubbed the Bird of Happiness Mr Murayama told us that these cranes appear attractively coordinated when they dance For Kamogawa the crane is the citys symbol and appears throughout the city The Los Angeles river has two main species of crane the greater sandhill and the lesser sandhill crane The greater prefers the Los Angeles and San Gabriel River estuaries the lesser can be found at the Tujunga Wash Cranes live for a long time 2030 years and mate for life in the wild Cranes travel long distances in pipes and tower environments In Kamogawa cranes were successfully hatched and released into the wild for 25 years Did you know Cranes and cranes have a special charm seldom will they fight instead they use warning calls The conflict between humans and cranes revolves around loss of habitat other threats are hunters power lines and environmental pollution This symposium was created to encourage preservation of cranes and their habitat Community engagement Audubon Center manages bird and river restoration education Facebook group Japanese Cranes LA partnered to create a bilingual film about Kamogawas Crane Habitat Restoration Project which shares cultural and environmental goals FoLAR and Kamogawa also partnered to develop vegetation to support cranes help purification and prevent erosion at Numa Benten Pond and nearby Omigawa Park Industrial debris was removed and native plants were planted at Omigawa for habitat and beautification Volunteers from Kamogawa schools and FoLAR planteddressed 1200 shrubs in 20172018 Ms Rea said that this project was a model for the LA river restoration We need to develop more appreciation about the value of restoration and stewardship She hopes that the partnership will be ongoing An action plan is underway to include new community projects and fundraising and a petition to protect the river from overdevelopment The lecture also noted that this international effort is a model for coastal cities worldwide suffering from climate change and species loss The Friends of Kamogawa Group will work with Kamogawa City and FoLAR to plan new projects and find funding to make them happen This twoday Fall event
