Breeding Behavior of the Barn Swallow Barn swallows tend to stay close to home during the breeding season and usually dont stray more than about 15 miles To attract a mate males build their nests from mud pellets and line these with feathers and dry grass Sometimes the nests are constructed on humanmade structures such as bridges barns or the walls of houses Once the nests are built males perform a series of aerial maneuvers and sing songs to impress the females After mating the female lays a clutch of 3 to 7 eggs and both parents share the duty of incubating the eggs and feeding the young The nesting period lasts about 1823 days after which the fledglings leave the nest but are still cared for by their parents for several more weeks Barn swallows may have two or three broods in a single breeding season They are highly social birds and often breed in colonies which helps in protecting the young from predators Their cooperative behavior extends to feeding and vigilance enhancing the survival rate of the offspring
