DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS OF NEO-TROPICAL BAMBOOS THOMAS J. ROBERTSON INSTITUTION LEWIS E. CLARK STATE UNIVERSITY HISTORICAL BAMBOOS TAXONOMY As a matter of conservation, bamboos are divided into two broad categories, Massoal (clumping) and the herbaceous bamboos (most of which are rhizomatous). Bamboo species generally have been poorly understood, primarily due to a lack of vegetative means which are widely recognized. HISTORICAL BAMBOOS MAP 1. Distribution of Chusquea species, an example of a geniculate genus. Map 2. Distribution of Lippidra species. This is an example of a widespread genus. TROPICAL AMERICA\nMap 7. Distribution of selected bamboo genera. TROPICAL AMERICA\nMap 8. Distribution of selected bamboo genera. Map 7. Distribution of selected bamboo genera. Map 8. Distribution of selected bamboo genera. NORTHEAST COAST OF OREGON PROVINCE. The species has been\nreported only from Senderos de la Wigueras, in the\nValle del Paran, Oiuyas (Map 13.2). Recently examined for\nSantiago and Fernando Castro (1993) at 1,200 m elev. in\ncentral Ecuador (the eastern part of the province of Los\nRios); and in surrounding areas, including the Tres\nRios area and the western part of Columbia. Grows in the\nnorthern portion of Santa Rosa Province in Costa Rica\nwhere it is more abundant. These populations of the\nspecies previously recognized as distinct species (now\nsynonymized with B. plebiscitum). Another area (presumably smaller) for the\nspecies is the region from Bocas del Toro, Panam. which\nare from Costa Rica in Panama, extending to Colombia.\nPeru (Map 3). A group of this species (Söderström, 1983)\n\nwas collected from the Universidad Nacional in southern\nPeru. It is important to note that the group was first\nidentified. There are also specimens from Bolivia and a\nfew are from the more eastern provinces which include the\nnorthern areas of Colombia. The Brazilian states of\nMaranhão, Piauí, and Parque do Iguaçu may also harbor\noccurrences of the species. The distribution also reaches\nnorthern Paraguay.
