GETTING TO KNOW CHICKEN FEEDS THE 4 CHEMICALS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN CHICKEN FEEDS The five most common feed additives used to boost poultry growth may harbor chemical substances that can lead to serious health problems for both chickens and humans In this article we list four common chemical feed additives used in poultry feeds what they do to hens and their health effects on people who consume them 1 Antibacterial and Antimicrobial Drugs Used to kill or control harmful bacteria in poultry feed these include tetracycline chlortetracycline oxytetracycline and penicillin If consumed by humans in large amounts these residues in meat can cause allergic reactions stomach and intestinal irritation and lead to the development of antibioticresistant bacteria 2 Animal Growth Promoters Including hormones and betaagonists these can increase growth rates and feed efficiency in poultry However their residues might pose health hazards to humans such as hormone disruption and increased risk of cancer 3 Coccidiostats They are chemicals used to prevent and control coccidiosis a parasitic disease common in poultry Common coccidiostats include sulfonamides and toltrazuril Excessive consumption of residues may cause allergic reactions and toxicity in humans 4 Mycotoxin Binders These substances prevent toxins produced by fungi in feed grains from affecting poultry While generally regarded as safe some binders may cause adverse effects if contamination levels are high Always read feed labels and consult with a veterinarian or poultry expert to ensure safe and healthy feeding practices for your chickens Avoid feed additives known to compromise chicken and human health For more information visit our website or contact the Farm Health Support Team
